15-year-old charged with J'ouvert morning murder of former soldier

A 15-year-old boy has appeared in the Port-of-Spain 8th Magistrate Court today charged with the Carnival J'ouvert murder of retired soldier, Calvert James.

James, 56, of 23 Gordon Avenue, Mt Lambert, died on Monday 27th February, 2017, from multiple stab wounds.

He was killed during an incident at the corner of Prince and Henry Streets, Port-of-Spain.

The accused, who cannot be identified as he is deemed a minor by law, was remanded to the St Michael Boys Rehabilitation Centre until Monday 27th March, 2017, by Deputy Chief Magistrate, Maria 
Busby Earle-Caddle.

Director of Public Prosecution, Roger Gaspard SC, on March 11th, 2017, gave instructions to charge the teenager with murder.

The charge was laid by Insp. Clarence Burnett of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region 1.
