Bail Bill is now law

Confirmation from the Attorney General that the president has proclaimed the Bail bill into law.

Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi says Her Excellency Paula-Mae Weekes signed off on the bill on Monday, August 5th.

Last Wednesday the bill was passed in the Lower House, which was the last parliamentary stage.

The bill received the unanimous support of both the Government and Opposition benches.

Once a bill has been passed by both houses, special assent copies are prepared for the signature of the President of the Republic.

When the president signs, the bill becomes an act. This gives the legislation the status of law.

The Bail bill seeks to deny bail for 120 days to a person charged with a listed offence, which is punishable for a term of imprisonment of ten years or more.
