Floods impact WASA plants, 14 communities to be affected

The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) says heavy rainfall associated with the passage of Tropical Storm Karen has impacted operations at several water treatment facilities that will affect customers throughout parts of North Trinidad.

Operations at the following Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) have been stopped due to issues such as turbid river conditions, siltation and power failures:

Tompire, Matura, Aripo, Guanapo, Caura, Acono, Luengo/Naranjo, Santa Cruz and Tucker Valley.

Some of the areas that will be affected include:

Toco, Salybia, Matura, Valencia, parts of Arima, Malabar, Santa Rosa, El Dorado, Tacarigua, parts of Tunapuna, Maracas - St. Joseph, Santa Cruz, Carenage, Chaguaramas, among others.

WASA says the affected facilities are expected to return to service when conditions normalise at the various locations.

In view of this situation, WASA is advising customers to manage their water use efficiently, as it may take up to 24 hours after restart of the facilities for the restoration of their scheduled pipe borne water supply.
