No water in parts of Trinidad

There has been a re­duced pro­duc­tion at the Point Lisas De­sali­na­tion Plant which will re­sult in no wa­ter for sev­er­al cus­tomers in Cen­tral and South West Trinidad.

A re­lease is­sued by the Wa­ter and Sew­er­age Au­thor­i­ty said there have been on­go­ing prob­lems at the Point Lisas De­sali­na­tion Plant.

Fol­low­ing the ini­tial dis­rup­tion on De­cem­ber 3, par­tial op­er­a­tion of the fa­cil­i­ty was achieved on the fol­low­ing day.

The au­thor­i­ty has con­firmed that cur­rent pro­duc­tion at the plant is 25 mil­lion gal­lons dai­ly (mgd) as com­pared to a ca­pac­i­ty of 40 mgd.

“The own­er and op­er­a­tor of the fa­cil­i­ty, the De­sali­na­tion Com­pa­ny of Trinidad and To­ba­go (De­sal­cott) has in­di­cat­ed that ramp­ing up of pro­duc­tion has been de­layed,” the re­lease said.

As a re­sult of the sit­u­a­tion, the au­thor­i­ty has con­tin­ued re-dis­tri­b­u­tion of wa­ter sup­plies from its Ca­roni and Navet Wa­ter Treat­ment Plants to sup­ple­ment the flows from the De­sali­na­tion Plant.

“Cus­tomers in the af­fect­ed ar­eas are again en­cour­aged to man­age their wa­ter use ef­fi­cient­ly as De­sal­cott con­tin­ues its ef­forts to ad­dress the prob­lem at their fa­cil­i­ty,” the re­lease added.

A lim­it­ed truck-borne wa­ter ser­vice will be avail­able with pri­or­i­ty giv­en to spe­cial homes, health care and gov­ern­ment in­sti­tu­tions.

WASA has apol­o­gised for the in­con­ve­nience caused as a re­sult of this sit­u­a­tion at the De­sali­na­tion Plant.
