Officer rewarded for good deed

A Port of Spain Magistrate has ordered that a $500 reward be given to Constable McLean of the Transit Police Unit after he chased after a thief and recovered a stolen cellphone on Wednesday. The defendant, 19-year-old Keno Stewart of Village Council Street Laventille was placed on a $20, 000 bond to keep the peace for two years after he pleaded guilty to the offence of larceny of the person. The court heard that around 2:25 pm on Tuesday 24th July 2018, the victim a female, was boarding a maxi taxi at City Gate, Port of Spain, when the defendant, an upper six student, grabbed her phone out her hand and made a dash for it. The woman raised an alarm and PC McLean who was on foot patrol duty at the time heard the woman's screams and observed Stewart running toward the East Dry River, on the opposite end of the maxi taxi hub. The officer immediately gave chase along with other officers as well as maxi taxi drivers who were lined up waiting for passengers. However, the thief was not quick enough for the lawman, as he was held on the priority bus route just outside City Gate. The Magistrate lauded PC McLean for his keen sense of observation and the relentless pursuit of the defendant. The victim who wished to remain unidentified, was thankful to the lawman that her phone was retrieved.
