Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has issued a statement congratulating Paralympic athlete Akeem Stewart on his gold medal accomplishment in the javelin competition at the Rio Paralympic Games.
The following is Persad-Bissessar's statement.
"I wish to warmly commend Mr. Akeem Stewart on his inspirational gold medal achievement in javelin at the Paralympics in Brazil.
The fact that Mr. Stewart’s achievement was also a world record is even more astounding and deserving of national adulation. Even further, he is also a champion athlete in discus and shot put. His skills and accomplishments are unparalleled nationally.
Mr. Stewart, who is only in his mid-twenties, encompasses the Olympic spirit and essence through his fortitude, single-minded purpose and abiding commitment
He is a national hero and motivational figure, not only for his Paralympic success but also for his prior record-breaking achievements at other international sporting events.
Mr. Stewart reminds us of what can be achieved through hard work, steadfastness and dedication to purpose. He is an inspiration to all of Trinidad and Tobago. I salute him and wish many more successes in his athletic career."
