The Jamaica Debates Commission (JDC) has confirmed that both the Peoples National Party (PNP) and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) have agreed, in principle, to participate in up to three political debates to be organized and staged by the Commission, ahead of Jamaica’s next General Elections.

Constitutionally, Jamaica’s next general election is due between February 25, 2021 and June 10, 2021. However, the Prime Minister may call an election ahead of the due date.

In an official statement, the JDC explains that the three debates will comprise:

(1st) a debate on social issues;

(2nd) a debate on economic issues; and

(3rd) a debate between the contenders for the office of Prime Minister.

The JDC says the debates will be broadcast/distributed live via television, radio and the internet.

On Wednesday 16 October, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the offices of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) by Dr. Horace Chang and Mr. Julian Robinson, the General Secretaries respectively of the JLP and the PNP. Witness to the signing of the MOU was JDC Chairman, Noel daCosta.

The JDC is a joint venture between the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce and Media Association of Jamaica (MAJ).
