With Carnival less than a month away a route has finally been agreed upon for the Parade of Bands in San Fernando, but it still has to be approved by the police.

Band leaders met with San Fernando mayor Junia Regrello on Monday evening at the Skiffle Bunch panyard where they agreed on the new route which includes a change in the judging point.

The police is in charge of security and traffic management in the southern city so the route must get their approval.

Checks with senior officers at the Police Administration Building in San Fernando revealed that the route proposal has not yet been forwarded to them for their approval.

Last year Kalicharan Carnival, which captured south Band of the Year title more than 20 times, refused to cross last year’s judging point at Harris Promenade because of its proximity to the San Fernando General Hospital.

The bands were instructed to turn down the volume as their music trucks passed close to the hospital so that patients would not be disturbed.

This year, the bands will not be passing along Harris Promenade.

According to the agreed route, the bands will pass the judging point on High Street, proceed along Coffee Street, turn onto Cipero Street, the Rienzi Kirton Highway and then Independence Avenue, San Fernando.

Lionel Jagessar Junior, of Jagessar Costumes, is hoping that the police approves the route.

He said, “We met with the mayor and we gave our proposal. We are waiting to get a response from the police.”

Aaron Kalicharan, of Kalicharan Carnival, said they will be crossing the judging point this year.

“We are very satisfied. The judging point is not on the promenade, it is on High Street,” he said

Usually, he said, Cipero Street attracts the most spectators. Wayne Hanooman, leader of San Fernando Band of the Year Fireworks Promotion, was also satisfied with the route.

He said the route does not bother him and he will abide with any route agreed upon.

Attempts to reach the mayor and Councillor Naigum Joseph, the convenor of Carnival, on their cellphone for a comment were unsuccessful.
