Soldier charged with daughter's murder

A soldier attached to the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force is expected to appear before a Sangre Grande Magistrate today, charged with the murder of his one-year-old daughter, Soriah Martin, which occurred on Tuesday 12th December, 2017.

No. 11584 Cpl. Kerros Martin, 29, of Jacelon Trace, Vega De Oropouche, was charged with murder, following advice received from Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Joan Honore-Paul, on Monday 8th January, 2018.

One-year-old Soriah, of Eastern Main Road, Sangre Grande, was in the care of her uncle, Gregory Harracksingh, 63, of the same address on Tuesday 12th December, 2017, when he got involved in an argument with a man over the child.

During the altercation, the man pulled out a firearm and shot at Harracksingh, who was holding Soriah in his arms at the time.

Harracksingh suffered a gunshot wound to his elbow and was taken to hospital, while Soriah who was also hit, died at the scene.

The accused previously appeared in court on Thursday 21st December, 2017, charged with wounding with intent against Harracksingh and was granted $75,000 bail.

Martin, was charged by Insp. Ken Lutchman, of Sangre Grande CID, on Tuesday 9th January, 2018.
