SWMCOL welcomes $20 tax on imported tyres

The Trinidad and Tobago Solid Waste Management Company Limited (SWMCOL) is welcoming Government's proposal to implement an environmental tax of $20 per tyre on all imported tyres to be put towards the cost of their proper disposal.

SWMCOL says it is anticipating that this initiative will lead to a reduction in the indiscriminate dumping of tyres, a practice that creates considerable environmental challenges such as providing breeding grounds for insects and rodents and leading to the proliferation of vector-borne diseases such as Dengue and Chik-V; and contributing to clogged waterways thus increasing the incidence and magnitude of flooding.

SWMCOL says it expects that the measure will stimulate the creation of downstream industries that will recycle used tyres into the manufacture of new, useful products, thereby creating employment and stimulating the economy.

SWMCOL says that it is against this background that it would like to encourage the population to grasp this opportunity to "Get into Green" as they strive to protect and preserve the environment.
