Two Venezuelans among several detained by police

Police have held two Venezuelan nationals under suspicion of breaching immigration laws. 

They were among several people detained by police in operations over the weekend.

The following is the police's account on the latest operations.

"Eastern Division – narcotics seized

Between the hours of 4:00pm on Friday 19th August 2016 and 6:30am on Sunday 21st August 2016, Asp Joseph, Sgt Sankar along with a party of officers attached to the Eastern Division conducted several anti-crime exercises in the Matura, Sangre Grande, Toco and Valencia districts.

During the anti-crime exercises 20 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued, 59 Field Interviews and 47 Field Sobriety Tests were conducted, 7 warrants were executed and 8 persons were arrested for various offences which included possession of cocaine, driving under the influence and outstanding warrant.

In another incident around 12:45pm on Sunday 21st August 2016, PC Sooknanan along with a party of officers attached to the Coastal Patrol Unit along with the assistance of members from the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment were on duty along Kernaham Trace, Mayaro when they had cause to stop the occupants of a silver and black Mazda 323. Whilst checking the vehicle registration documents of the driver PC Sooknanan observed the front seat passenger kicking a bag under the seat.

The bag was searched and the officers found and seized 1578 grammes marijuana with a street value of $23,670.00 and $10,000.00 TT currency.

PC Rampersad is continuing investigations.

Western Division – anti-crime exercises

Between the hours of 8:00pm on Friday 19th August 2016 and 12midnight on Sunday 21st August 2016, Sgt Maraj, PC Pacheco along with a party of officers attached to the Western Division conducted several anti-crime exercises in the Pt Cumana and Carenage districts.

During the exercises 10 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued, 3 Field Interviews and 37 Field Sobriety Tests were conducted and 6 persons were arrested for various offences which included driving under the influence and outstanding warrant.

The exercises were spearheaded by Ag. Snr Supt Adams

Tobago Division – anti-crime exercises

Between the hours of 8:40pm on Friday 19th August 2016 and 1:00am on Saturday 20th August 2016, PC Phillip along with a party of officers attached to the Tobago Divisional Task Force and the Criminal Investigations Department conducted an anti-crime exercise in the Scarborough District.

During the exercise 3 Field Interviews and 4 Field Sobriety Tests were conducted. The exercise was coordinated by Snr Supt Archie and spearheaded by Cpl Taylor.

Central Division – anti-crime exercises

Between the hours of 6:00pm and 10:00pm on Friday 19th August 2016, Inspector Bhagwandeen, Sgt Piquette along with a party of officers attached to the Central Division conducted several anti-crime exercises in the Couva, Cunupia, Freeport, Las Lomas and Longdenville districts.

During the exercises 17 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued, 113 Field Interviews were conducted, 53 Voluntary Breathalyzer Tests were administered and 5 persons were arrested for various offences. Of the persons arrested 2 Venezuelan Nationals were detained pending further enquiries relating to being illegal immigrants."
