Two-year-old girl knocked down; now declared brain dead

A two-year-old girl has been deemed brain dead and is now surviving only on machines, after being hit by a pick-up truck in Arima.

The child is now in a critical condition with a collapsed lung at the Mt Hope hospital.

The accident occurred along La Retreat Road, Arima.

Reports indicate that a 29-year-old man was driving his Nissan Frontier when he observed some pedestrians standing on the pavement.

He told police that the child suddenly stepped into the roadway and he was unable to avoid hitting her.

The child was treated for haemorrhaging to the brain, a broken collar bone, two fractures of the vertebral column, two lacerations to the liver and multiple abrasions about her body. 

This is the fifth tragic incident involving a child in the last week.

On Wednes­day, two-year-old Ter­raci­na Ariel Meena Mooni­lal was crushed to death by a truck out­side her home in Waller­field.

An au­top­sy re­vealed she died from mul­ti­ple blunt force trau­ma.

Lit­tle Ter­raci­na man­aged to re­move a wood­en bar­ri­er and fol­low her 12-year-old cousin out­side.

Her cousin was speak­ing to the dri­ver of the truck who had stopped to ask for di­rec­tions.

Last Monday, a four-year-old res­i­dent of the Bridge of Hope Chil­dren’s Home, was found un­re­spon­sive at the fa­cil­i­ty in San­gre Grande.

In a state­ment on Wednes­day, the Chil­dren’s Au­thor­i­ty said an in­ves­ti­ga­tion has been launched in­to the in­ci­dent.
