UNC Senator resigns

United National Congress (UNC) senator Ashvani Mahabir has resigned.

The outgoing senator confirmed via text message that he tendered his resignation to the Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar today and she accepted it.

"The OL (Opposition Leader) has accepted my resignation. On official statement is expected soon. UNC PRO may assist," Mahabir said.

In a brief telephone interview, Persad-Bissessar also confirmed that she received and accepted Mahabir's resignation.

Persad-Bissessar said she would notify the President to revoke his appointment and name his replacement "shortly".

On June 1, the Sunday Guardian reported that Mahabir was set to be removed as a senator.

According to party insiders then, there was talk that a shake-up was coming and that Mahabir was expected to be removed from his Senate seat.

Mahabir was appointed to the Senate just a month ago to replace attorney Gerald Ramdeen.Ramdeen resigned after he and former attorney general Anand Ramlogan were arrested and questioned by the Anti-Corruption Investigations Bureau last month.
