UPDATE: Fuad Abu Bakr released; vehicle still impounded

Leader of the New National Vision political party Fuad Abu bakr, has been released by police after being detained for questioning with regards to a stolen vehicle.

Bakr was allowed to go free around midnight but police have not released the vehicle he was driving.

Bakr and his wife Kristy Ramnarine were on their way home when police stopped the vehicle on the Beetham highway and ordered them out at gunpoint, on suspicion that the vehice they were in was a stolen vehicle.

Bakr had informed the police that he had purchased the vehicle, carrying the registration number TCK1990 from Neal and Massy (now Massy Automotives) seven years ago.

Police received a certified copy of the vehicle from his wife, confirming the registration number and chassis numbers.

Although Bakr was allowed to leave, the police have impounded the vehicle, saying they first have to check with the Licensing Division and Massy Automotives on Thursday, before the vehicle could be released.

Bakr has not been charged with any offence.
