Young: 14 interceptors being restored to address porous borders

National Security Minister Stuart Young says the Cabinet has taken a decision to restored 14 Coast Guard interceptors, back into service, following video circulating earlier this week of foreign nationals coming ashore in Erin.

The minister says they will help to protect the country's maritime borders, saying the aim is to have them up and running in the "shortest possible time".

He told today's post-Cabinet news conference that Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley recently visited the Coast Guard headquarters and was told that out of 25 interceptors, not many were working.

He said interceptors will be strategically placed along T&T for the protection of the borders on the basis of intelligence reports.

The minister says it will cost just over $6 million to get the interceptors back up and running.
