No money to settle public servants' backpay; Govt's main account in $30 billion deficit

Finance Minister Colm Imbert has told the Parliament that the main account the Government uses to pay bills, is $30 billion in deficit.

Minister Imbert says that as a result, it cannot access money to pay arrears owed to public servants and members of the protective services.

He says the Government has found that as the General Election drew near, there was a "mad rush" to settle payments to contractors even though the Government "knew that the money was not available".
