Eight Venezuelans committed to stand trial on charges of trafficking $50 million in cocaine

Eight Venezuelans have been committed to stand trial in the High Court on charges of importing and trafficking cocaine with a street value of $50 million.

In giving her ruling, Deputy Chief Magistrate Nanette Forde-John, presiding in the Port-of-Spain Fifth Court, found that a prima facie case had been made out against the foreigners.

They are: Victor Jose Careno, Oscar Thomas Ruiz Colmenarez, Dionya Andres Marval Salazar, Alexis Caldea Lopez, Pablo Rafael Marval Rodriguez, Jose Gregario Marval Salazar, Saul Ellia Waldrop and Jose Florentino Alcala Carrion.

Coast Guard serviceman dies after falling off vessel

A Coast Guard serviceman has died following an accident at the Coast Guard base at Staubles Bay, Chaguaramas.

A statement issued by the Coast Guard today says that Leading Seaman Deryck Nichols, 37, succumbed to injuries sustained after falling overboard a Coast Guard vessel at Staubles Bay.

The statement adds that he was rushed to the St James District Facility where he was pronounced dead.

The statement adds that the Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Pregnant woman among 15 rescued after being trapped on Madamas Bay since Saturday

Over a dozen people, including a pregnant woman and a man who suffered a stroke have been rescued from Trinidad's north coast, after being stranded for several days.

Reports indicate that the group of 15 persons was trapped on Madamas Bay since Saturday.

Two people, a male who is said to have suffered a stroke and a pregnant female were airlifted and conveyed to hospital.

Coast Guard rescue boat drifting off East Coast for last 6-7 days

The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard has rescued a boat that had been adrift for the last 6 to 7 days.

The vessel was on the way from Spain to Grenada when it developed problems.

The Defence Force says that at 8pm on Thursday,  Lieutenant Diaz; Captain of TTS Speyside received information about a vessel, "Wichita", adrift on the East Coast of Trinidad. 

Coast Guard boat CG25 was deployed to the vessel’s last known position, six nautical miles east of the Dolphin Production Platform, to render assistance.

56-year-old man drowns at Maracas Bay

A 56-year-old man has drowned at Maracas Beach and two other people who were also caught in the current were rescued by the Coast Guard and lifeguards.

He has been identified as Primchan Ramlal.

A statement by the Coast Guard says that on Sunday 2nd July 2017 at approximately 7:10 pm, the Coast Guard received a report from a coast guard officer, Able Seaman Henry, who was on Maracas beach at the time, that there were three persons in some difficulty in the water.

Two were males and one was female.  

Body of missing father found along Mayaro coastline

The body of Dinesh Mahabir, who went missing while swimming in Guayaguayare on Sunday, was found this morning in Mayaro.

The Coast Guard says that around 11.20 this morning they received a call that a man's body washed ashore along a coastline in Mayaro called 'Animal Farm'.

Mahabir's body was positively identified soon after by his father.

This brings to an end a two-day search for the father of one.

On Sunday morning Mahabir and two other friends went for a swim at the beach near Frontin Road.

Coast Guard makes $18 million cocaine bust

The Coast Guard has seized cocaine valued at $18 million dollars in a bust following a routine exercise.

The bust was made early Thursday morning aboard a pirogue.

The following is a statement by the Coast Guard:

"On Thursday 25th May 2017 at approximately 3:30 am a Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard interceptor, while on routine patrol intercepted a twenty-four ft white pirogue in the Gulf of Paria with three (3) occupants on board.
