Opposition, experts expect ‘election’ goodies in budget

Ex­pect an ‘elec­tion’ Bud­get when Min­is­ter of Fi­nance Colm Im­bert de­liv­ers the 2020 Bud­get on Mon­day, Oc­to­ber 7, so said the ex­perts as well as the Op­po­si­tion.

The pro­jec­tions came yes­ter­day af­ter Im­bert an­nounced the bud­get’s de­liv­ery date dur­ing a brief state­ment in Par­lia­ment yes­ter­day.

NUGFW elections pushed back to October

The National Union of Government & Federated Workers's (NUGFW's) National Executive Council elections will be held on October 28th, when they are constitutionally due.

The election was scheduled to take place today but President General James Lambert said it didn’t take place because the opposing side, Team Shield, served him with a pre-action protocol letter stating that the election was unconstitutionally brought forward.

Lambert said that was incorrect and that his team, Team Faithful, followed all protocols before advancing the date.  

CCJ sends Guyana back to polls

This in essence was the ef­fect of the Caribbean Court of Jus­tice rul­ing on Tues­day which held that pas­sage of a no-con­fi­dence mo­tion filed by the Op­po­si­tion against the rul­ing par­ty was valid.

Guyana’s Gov­ern­ment and Op­po­si­tion have been asked to come to­geth­er to de­cide on the way for­ward for the coun­try fol­low­ing the CCJ’s de­ci­sion.

MSJ to contest local, general elections

The Move­ment for So­cial Jus­tice (MSJ) says it will con­test all 114 elec­toral dis­tricts in the up­com­ing Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment Elec­tions and 41 con­stituen­cies in next year’s Gen­er­al Elec­tion as it seeks to over­throw the Peo­ple’s Na­tion­al Move­ment (PNM).

Nom­i­na­tions for can­di­dates will take place at the par­ty’s head­quar­ters from Ju­ly 1 to 31 be­tween 9 am and 4 pm. Forms are avail­able at the head­quar­ters and on­line. Can­di­dates will be screened fol­low­ing nom­i­na­tion.

Rowley, Chin Lee among unopposed contestants in PNM election

Five positions within the People's National Movement (PNM) the will not see any contest when the party hold's its internal elections on September 16th.

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley will run for political leader unopposed.

Camille Robinson Regis will not be challenged for the position of Lady Vice Chairman.

Former National Security Minister Howard Chin Lee will also run unopposed for the position of Treasurer.
