As the Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar launched her local government election campaign, she promised to create 50,000 jobs if she is re-elected Prime Minister. Reiterating her warning that the Rowley-led Peoples National Movement (PNM) government wants to steal the elections, Persad-Bissessar said the United National Congress (UNC) will not allow it.
Trade Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon has given more details of two major projects between Government and Beijing Construction Engineering Group Co. Ltd. (BCEG) which are to be implemented by Lake Asphalt Limited and Evolving Tecknologies and Enterprise Development Company Limited (eTeck).
This follows Monday;s signing of a memorandum of understanding by Zhang Chuancheng Deputy General Manager, BCEG and Steve De Las President of eTeck for development of the Phoenix Park Industrial Estate.
Government has agreed to put a moratorium on retrenchment in the public sector until December 31.
This was agreed to yesterday by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley following a three-hour long meeting with the Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM), led by Oilfield Workers’ Trade Union president general Ancel Roget at the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair.
Among the trade unions attending the marathon talks with the PM were leaders of the Communications Workers' Union, National Union of Government and Federated Workers and the Public Services Association.
The San Fernando City Corporation says it is cutting its contingent of casual daily-paid workers by 60 for the upcoming fortnight, based on a need to cut costs.
The Corporation made the announcement via the following media statement:
"Following our meeting with the Contractors and General Workers Union in April the failed layoff continues. The San Fernando City Corporation has made every effort to hold on to as many daily-paid workers as possible.
