Persad-Bissessar: Dr Anthony Sabga will be remembered for his "generous spirit"

Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar says the late Chairman Emeritus of the ANSA McAL Group of Companies, Dr Anthony Sabga, will be remembered for his generous spirit.

Persad-Bissessar issued a statement saying she was saddened by Dr Sabga's passing.

"I was greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Anthony Norman Sabga, O.R.T.T., Founder and Chairman Emeritus of the ANSA McAl Group of Companies.

Opposition Leader concerned about Children's Life Fund's rejection of Shannen

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is expressing concern over the rejection by the Children’s Life Fund to a request for assistance for 4-year-old Shannen Luke.

On Tuesday the head of the Children’s Life Fund rejected an application for assistance on two grounds.

Persad-Bissessar: Many lessons to learn from Spiritual Baptists

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says there is a lot this country can learn from the experiences of Spiritual Baptists.

Opposition Leader extends condolences on passing of Derek Walcott

Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar has extended condolences to the family of poet Derek Walcott who passed away at his St Lucia home this morning.

Persad-Bissessar issues the following statement on his passing.

"It was with deep sorrow that I learned of the passing of world renowned poet and Nobel Laureate Sir Derek Walcott.

Born in St Lucia, Sir Derek spent a considerable part of his life in Trinidad and Tobago, after moving to this country in 1953.

Persad-Bissessar: Strong leadership needed to address issues facing women

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says strong leadership is needed to address the issues concerning women.

She made the remark in recognition of International Women's Day.

AG: Opposition Leader "ridiculous" to offer political & legal opinion on unpublished proposed legislation

Attorney General Faris Al Rawi says it is "wildly irresponsible and ridiculous" of Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, to offer a legal view with respect to proposed legislation, which he says has not even been published.

The AG issued a statement today in response to criticism by Persad-Bissessar on the issue of a three-fifths majority in Parliament.

He says at no time did she quote what he actually said.

Persad-Bissessar: Any attempts to remove three-fifths requirements will be met with strongest condemnation by Opposition

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says any attempts by the Attorney General Faris Al Rawi and the Government to remove the requirement for a three-fifths majority of Parliament will be met by the strongest Opposition condemnation.

Persad-Bissessar challenges AG's "tactics" to allow marriage bill to pass with simple majority

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is questioning the decision by Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi to omit the parts of the marriage legislation that needed a special majority, to ensure that it was passed in the Senate last night.

Persad-Bissessar says the AG appears to be legislating "by tactics" and is calling on him to state whether he had Cabinet's permission to do so.
