INTERNATIONAL: Civil rights birthplace Montgomery elects first black mayor

The capital of Alabama, the city where the US civil rights movement was born, has elected the first black mayor in its 200-year history.

Steven Reed, a county probate judge, beat local TV station owner David Woods by a decisive majority to become mayor of Montgomery.

Mr Reed won 67% of the 48,979 votes cast in Tuesday's run-off, according to preliminary results.

The 45-year-old is expected to be sworn in at Montgomery City Hall in November.

Sando mayor offended by shanty town remark

San Fer­nan­do May­or Ju­nia Re­grel­lo has tak­en of­fence to Sen­a­tor Allyson West’s de­scrip­tion of the south­ern city as a shan­ty town, de­scrib­ing her re­marks as ex­treme­ly un­for­tu­nate.

Dur­ing the de­bate on Petrotrin’s re­fin­ery in Par­lia­ment on Tues­day, West said she was a “proud mem­ber of San Fer­nan­do” hav­ing grown up there with “pride and hope pro­pelled by the ex­is­tence of Tex­a­co and Petrotrin.”

Chaguanas Mayor to crack down on illegal drag racing

Chaguanas Mayor Gopaul Boodhan says he intends to stamp out illegal drag racing in the borough after receiving complaints that the stretch of roadway on the northern side of the Ministry of Agriculture head office and along Connector Road, Charlieville are being used as drag strips at nights.

“This cannot be tolerated and it’s illegal, I am asking for people to refrain from this activity or feel the full brunt of the law. There are too many accidents and road deaths across T&T,” Boodhan said during an interview at the Borough head office on Friday.
