Russia opens World Cup with 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia

Hosts Russia roared its World Cup intent to the rafters with a 5-0 tournament-opening win over Saudi Arabia in the opening game of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The Russians served up an adrenaline-fuelled performance for an 80,000-capacity Luzhniki crowd that included President Vladimir Putin and the Saudi crown prince.

The Saudis, ranked three places above Russia at 67 in the world rankings, played some nice, tight football at times, but were never able to match the Russian hosts for energy or intent.

Joint US, Canada, Mexico bid wins as World Cup comes back to Concacaf in 2026

The United States, Canada and Mexico have won the right to host the 2026 World Cup after a vote of Fifa delegates in Moscow.

A joint bid by the three North American countries under the name ’United’ saw off the challenge of a rival proposal from Morocco, winning over two-thirds of the vote.

The United bid persuaded 134 of the 203 delegates eligible to vote at the 68th annual Fifa congress, which was held on the eve of the 2018 tournament in Russia.
